« More / 1983 ExpoOn 13th October 2022: during the Tokyo Expo, Shinichi Wakasa put a remarkable post on twitter with these photographs, stating that the models used in Star Fleet had been revamped as shown for an exhibition that took place in 1983 in a department store in either Shibuya or Yokohama. Link It seems that the models were modified and given over to defray the costs of making the show. I'm not sure that the models benefitted entirely from the changes made to them, but, to me, they raise some interesting ideas: In shows like Gundam, prototype versions of prominent mobile suits are sometimes encountered in mangas that spin off from a main TV show. These prototype versions have variations in equipment and design, as well as different colour schemes. Gundam SEED and its Astray offshoots spring to mind as an example. These modifications could serve as inspiration for prototype versions of X-Bomber and Dai-X, or earlier configurations of the same machines prior to them being reworked at Moonbase. Equally, they could be more economical, mass-produced versions of X-Bomber that are manafuctured after the events of the show (perhaps even 3 years after, given the date of the exhibition), as featured in a number of fan stories available on this site. Note that on X-Bomber, the Dai-X container modules are covered over. I see that the X-Bomber is shown flying over what appears to be a moon of Saturn (perhaps Mimas) with an EDF-style installation behind it on the surface. This makes me wonder whether EDF had a monitoring and testing facility there either before or after the events of the series. Images
