The comment from one of the designers that Japanese mecha are "over-engineered crap" is a little funny considering how much influence Gerry Anderson shows have had on Japanese anime over the years...!

I suspect the Japanese would call it a "Gattai Mecha" (combining mecha). The Japanese are also very good at coming up with acronyms after the fact (General Usage Non-Discontinity Augmented Manoeuvring system for example; I never did find out if that was official but it apparently was devis...

If you have access to BBCs iPlayer, you may still be able to access the Queen documentary "Days Of Our Lives" - about 15 minutes into the second episode, Brian May talks very briefly about the "Star Fleet Project" with a few seconds of footage from the show.
