« Comics - Japan / Televi-Kun - 1980-11Full-colour Feature In this first of six instalments of Televi-Kun, containing a feature on Star Fleet, we have an inside cover, introducing the ship and most of its crew. There are also two double-page spreads, illustrating the Alliance Battlecruiser and X-Bomber, as well the heroes and villains. Manga The first segment of the manga portrays the events of the first episode of the show, with the heroes arriving at Moonbase (albeit apparently by astrofighter, rather than shuttle). The pilots then meet Dr Benn (who seems a bit more theatrical than in the show), as well as Lamia and Kirara. The EDF astrofighters do battle with the Alliance cruiser and the pilots are introduced to the X-Bomber. X-Bomber launches from a more traditional hangar, apparently within the moonbase complex, rather than through a crater from the underground hangar, some distance from the moonbase facility, as seen in the show. The artist, for me, has a good handle on the anatomy of the ships, while stylising them a bit, and puts a novel but faithful spin on the characters. Scanning Remarks The limited number of pages were difficult to scan. These books exceed 200 pages and the paper after the first 50 glossy pages is very thin. Because of the thickness of the book, Photoshop had terrible difficulty trying to detect matching edges in order to do a photomerge. In some cases, it was possible to manually improve the results, but most double-pages had to be joined manually. In this instalment, the manga pages were especially faded in places and I had to use every option in Photoshop to maximise the contrast. This had the effect of lightening the pinkish colouration of the paper to varying extents and leaving the resulting outputs less than uniform. Images
