I thought it would be nice to have some BIG Star Fleet screen grabs floating around the net so here are ten 720 by 480 images taken from the X Bomber DVDs. http://www.bigdaix.com/starfleetgallerypage.htmMany more to come.Shane.

It really is a good DVD transfer, isn't it? Laserdisc conversion or from the original masters, I wonder...

The transfer is very good indeed, but then the Laserdiscs were pretty good too. You can see every spec of dust and scratch on the film. And lots of model wires that were once invisible because of the fuzziness of VHS now stick out like sore thumbs. But it's all part of the charm innit. If someone would just tack the english soundtrack over the top and release the bloody thing over here, all would right with the world.Shane.

Ah, right, so what we really want is a digitally remastered-with-all-the-strings-removed English edition. Right Interesting, actually, because of course the grabs that I've done have come off digitised versions of the (PAL) VHS tapes which have been subject to some basic smoothing/noise filtering and although the result is probably a little... artificial, as a result, with VHS having been the origin perhaps there's a certain advantage there in terms of image quality. I suppose when you stop and think about it, how big and what quality were the TVs we all watched it on first time round and how much did we forgive as kids? If I watched Thunderbirds now I'd probably notice the strings more...

Well, for measurable quality using the resolution of each format, here's one way to look at it...VHS tape can record 220 - 240 horizontal lines.Laserdiscs use 400 - 425 horizontal lines.Commercial DVDs use up to 540 horizontal lines. So, no matter what size of TV you watched as a child, seeing the same show on Laserdisc or DVD today would easily have twice as much detail than what you saw before. Then, consider that VHS tapes often degrade quickly and you've got an even greater difference. You might be surprised how much easier digital remastering is these days. The Indiana Jones series was recently remastered digitally with all the grunt work done automatically by the computers. Removing strings would be a much more tedious human-driven task, but simply cleaning up the originals would be (relatively) easy enough.Of course, I could easily forgive the strings today if it meant a real English-dubbed DVD release would be available.

Oh, I would be very displeased indeed if someone were to erase the strings, wires etc. It's part of what makes this sort of show fun to watch now as an adult. Shane.

Hi that's a great image library - really nicely framed. (I never knew Hercules had an adjustable wrench as part of his uniform).
Dream big and bold and daring.
