Remastering--Grain Removal

If you think I'm going to use the trial version with that watermark for the final rendering, don't be crazy. I'm going to purchase the full version for $50 (quite a bit but I want this to come out as best as possible)The remastered footage on the French DVD is extremely grainy to the point it is almost distracting, so I've been trying to find ways to combat that in Adobe Premiere-unfortunately the built in Noise reduction plugins suck majorly-they remove a lot of the finer details. But I am pleased with the results here, there's a bit of Noise Reduction Artifact but that to me is less distracting than the grain.For this I used a scene from Episode 7, because that is one of the most grainy on the DVD's compared to others.So I will hopefully try and buy the full plugin within the next month or two.

Hey Blades, that's a good result!Hope you can get that plugin, I'm looking forward to your eventual complete remaster of the entire series, with missing bits of course A pity interested parties couldn't sponsor you or something?

Looks really nice!What exactly is the score with Star Fleet in terms of a remaster? I mean yeah, I know we'll never get an official one, but is that because 1) the original film has been lost, or 2) it was rendered on tape like a lot of shows around that time?A crying shame either way, I'd pay a small fortune for a pristine version.

It was almost certainly made on film, because the differences in pictures between releases show they're taken from different scans. There were comparison screenshots posted on the forum a while back, though I can't find the thread in question.

Wonder what Fabulous had to work with when they were trying to remaster the series for the DVDs. At best I imagine that they were using later generation copies of the original film.

At best I imagine that they were using later generation copies of the original film.Definitely, the masters for the English version were put on 16mm film rather than 35mm and the masters were quite inconsistent with hues of orange, blue, grey or green in some episodes.Fabulous Films obviously used those and those aren't well suited for a proper remaster. I don't doubt that they've done some amount of restoring to it, but the English masters were flawed 2nd or 3rd generation condition so not crisp enough for a proper remastering.I will make a comparison image at some point.

Such a shame - What I wouldn't give for a pristine transfer. The sets and model work alone would look glorious in high definition, but then even at 576i, off a decent transfer would look very good. Certainly not knocking FF as they at least tried to remaster what they could get a hold of, but it's still a shame that both they, and us, couldn't get something better.Still, on the bright side, it's good just to get the series at all, and not have to rely on the VCDs and US tapes! Never really thought that would happen so really, you know, first world problems an' all that!

I don't think we'll see it in 720p, but my remaster project will hopefully make up for it.I would certainly take the lousy 16mm prints on DVD than none at all. When looking at the rips of the US VHS tapes, the quality was worst than the official DVD, but still the same transfers clearly, just the VHS had the natural VHS compression to it.
