Godzilla/The Mysterians

Post by FZeroOne »

A couple of recent DVD releases that might be of interest to some here, both amazingly enough from the British Film Institute. The original, unedited, Godzilla - classic 50s Japanese SF and very far removed from the "doing it for the yen" movies the big "G" made in his later years. A dark and haunting SF thriller about the consequences of atomic power. The Mysterians - another 50s Japanese SF film, and an early colour one. Its a little hokey by todays standards - aliens want our women! - and a bit slow, but features impressive effects work from effects mastero Eiji Tsuburaya. Thunderbirds fans will probably enjoy the "Alpha" and "Beta" fighter-bombers and the mighty Markalite tanks. One oddity from an anime fans point of view is that while both films are subtitled, many incidental phrases (such as "Moshi moshi?" - "Hello?" - when answering a telephone) are not translated. It won't be much of a hassle for anime fans but does seem a bit strange...
