The Big Apple (no, not that one, the other one)

Post by AndyThomas »

I am marking the start of a new decade in New York City in a week's time. I can't promise I'll visit many specialist emporiums but if anyone has anything light-ish they think I could pick up I could try! I am also open to recommendations, although the itinerary is pretty packed; Midtown Comics seems like the most accessible place...

Sounds like a fun trip, I finally get a week off at the start of November.

This new job is really tiring. I haven't got any time or energy left to work on my game. Maybe once I get this week to myself...

At least I've got the job. My friend was made redundant by JCB on his birthday this week.

On second thoughts, you probably wanna stay in the US.

EDIT:
That's my pessimistic side talking.
Why don't you tell us what you're planning on bringing back for yourself?

It was a pretty tiring holiday trying to hit all the major sightseeing stuff while also trying to keep a seven year old amused, but I went up in a helicopter on my 40th which was cool and saw a lot of the movie stuff. I even, would you believe, recognised a spot in Central Park from the end of the first Avengers movie - I checked, and I was right! In fact that last few minutes all look to be set in Central Park. I also saw Ghostbusters HQ and the New York Public Library, the latter more by accident than good planning! It ain't a cheap holiday, that much is certain!

Just tried to upload an image of what I picked up at Midtown Comics on the one occasion I went off by myself but it's too big; I filled a few gaps in my graphic novels collection, got some random new stuff and picked up the Eve Source book which I hadn't planned on doing but I had holiday money and I thought the odds of my tripping over it again were slim, so went for it. Haven't really had chance to delve into them much yet mind you! I went there about ten o'clock at night - the city really never sleeps! I only had time to look over one floor, there was another with models and stuff but I just didn't have the time. That was just one of their stores in Manhattan too!

That sounds like an awesome trip.
About the Eve book, my motto is, if you want it and you can afford it, buy it.
Otherwise you usually spend a long time regretting it.

Have you seen the latest Thunderbirds Are Go? It was probably the best episode since the beginning 2-parter.

The meteor one? Yes, I tend to be pretty up to speed due to the little one liking to watch it with me! I may have missed something, but I did have a few niggles although they're understandable. They did of course have to do the "pew pew" sound effects for the big laser blasts, it's a kids show after all, but I thought the tracking system was well handled as was the subsequent selective targeting, very logical.

Presumably Scott's jetpack was too much on the lunar surface having been designed to counter normal gravity, but I wonder what it used for propellant - ain't no oxygen to burn up there. Similarly, consider if you will Scott's uniform. He wore his standard uniform plus a helmet for the space mission. That's a fingerless uniform - I noticed it when he was holding onto the buggy. I then also realised that there's no seal around his neck between the helmet and the uniform, so the back of his neck was going to get a little chilly!

I do like the use of "hard" science as far as it goes on the series, tying the meteor storm into an actual astrological event, that's clever. Thunderbird 3's reaction jets constantly fire as it's shifting trajectory. Breathing out so their lungs don't explode, also a nice comment (had to explain why they said it to the little one!) It's like Star Trek Lite. It's the sort of show that makes me proud of what kids TV can achieve when handled will love and care. Brilliant how they're mixing traditional sets with the CGI too. It modernises the show without making it look the same as every other kid's show. I think it deserves to do really well.

Unfortunately the little one has just entered his Power Rangers phase. I'll do my best to keep him on track, but by God, they're clever at marketing this stuff! Quite impressed with the Megazord he brought back from the US though, I always assumed they'd be a bit throw-away but it's actually easy for him to transform and very solid. Which is what it needs to be...!

I remember my Thunder Megazord. I'd be about 10 then. All the Power Rangers stuff is made by Bandai unless much has changed and it's really well put-together.

For the last couple of years, I've been trying to watch Power Rangers all the way through (every series) in bursts.
This weekend, I kicked off with Ninja Storm, which is really entertaining and light-hearted unlike some that take themselves a bit seriously.

But it still has weapons, Zords, trash-talk and a lot of the Zords/rangers are cool remakes of the Beetleborgs as well.

O. M. G. Crash, that signature of yours has been ringing a dim and distant bell in my head for a while now so I finally went and looked it up. Straight back to my Uni days, struggling to find a TV to watch Space Above and Beyond on at the dead of night! It was the Firefly of its time! And now I find out it's actually officially out on DVD! I clung onto my VHS recordings of it for a long time! I'll have to see if the local HMV stocks it at some point. Chiggy Von Richthoven, great episode that...

I watched that episode the other night.
I could've sworn it missed a big bit, unless I wasn't watching very closely.

Wasn't there supposed to be a part where the chiggy ace fighter gets hit with missiles and falls into the clouds of a planet's atmosphere, allowing the 58 squadron to escape?

I never saw that when I watched it. I can't remember if Chiggy von Richtofen appears in another episode or whatever but I remember that bit vividly for it not to have happened.

Didn't they originally put that show on at 10:50 at night on a Friday? I didn't catch many episodes that way when I was little.

EDIT: No, I'm an idiot. The episode before; episode 14 is all about CVR as well. It musta happened in there.
